Scientists have found that loneliness can lead to Parkinson’s disease. Lonely people of different ages are 37% more likely to develop this disease, leading to Gazeta.ru data published in EurekAlert.

The study was conducted by specialists from the University of Florida College of Medicine; almost 500 thousand people from 38 to 73 years old took part in it. Scientists asked them the question: “Do you feel lonely?” 15 years after the start of the study, 2,822 people were diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. The results showed that people who considered themselves lonely had a 37% higher risk of developing the disease than others.

Experts have concluded that loneliness makes the brain more susceptible to loss of neuronal structure and function, which can lead to Parkinson’s disease or Alzheimer’s disease.
