“The Story of Saudi Arabia’s Drug Smuggling Punishment: The Proposal, Execution, and Controversy”

Al-Marsad Newspaper: Hassan Al-Asmari, a Saudi officer with the rank of retired brigadier general, narrated the story of a proposal to him to apply the punishment for combating drug smuggling in the Kingdom, and revealed the name of the first person to be executed.

He said during an interview with Asharq Al-Awsat: “King Fahd approved of the idea, and told me, there is no death sentence, in this crime of ‘drug smuggling’, we have difficulty obtaining a prison order, for a period of 5 years, 10 years, or 15 years, depending increase the crime.

He continued, “I said, ‘Why don’t we try it? This is corruption on earth.’ I think the death penalty is being imposed. Why don’t we work like Singapore?”

He continued, “I was reading in the newspapers, in those days, that Singapore would issue a death sentence for British promoters in Singapore.”

He added, “The proposal was adopted, and the Council of Senior Scholars issued a decision to implement the death sentence once morest them, and the first person to be executed was Haqi Jadu Muhammad.”
