TikTok launches Must Eat in-app restaurant guide

TikTok is launching an in-app restaurant guide named “Must Eat,” pulling data from 40 million posts and comments to highlight local dining spots across New York City, Los Angeles, and the San Francisco Bay Area.

Mapping the Viral Food Economy

The feature brings food recommendations scattered across millions of videos into a centralized interface. Users can search for nearby businesses on a map, filter results by cuisine, price, rating, and location, and save places to bookmarks.

TikTok US CEO Adam Presser described the feature at a launch event as a compilation of all conversations happening across the platform among creators, restaurateurs, and individuals, as noted by The Verge.

Everyday Eats and Elevated Dining

Must Eat splits restaurant recommendations into two primary categories: “Everyday Eats” for casual neighborhood spots, and “Elevated Dining” for celebrations and special occasions. The guide integrates directly with OpenTable, allowing users to book reservations straight through the app for select restaurants. Additionally, diners can call businesses, read user reviews, and tap through to the original videos attached to each listing.

Direct Threat to Yelp and Google Maps

The community-driven feature positions the short-form video platform in direct competition with established discovery tools like Yelp and Google Maps. The rollout marks a deeper push into the physical dining space for a platform that already heavily influences where people eat.

TikTok reported that 27 million U.S. diners visited a restaurant, cafe, or shop for the first time because of the app last year, according to figures cited by The Verge. Viral content has noticeably shifted restaurant operations, inspiring menu items designed specifically for social media visibility, such as elaborate cheese pulls and dramatic presentations.

Expanding on TikTok Go Infrastructure

The launch builds on earlier in-app travel capabilities. Earlier this year, TikTok introduced TikTok Go, which allowed creators to tag and link to hotels and attractions, enabling direct bookings. Must Eat expands that infrastructure into the restaurant sector. Participating businesses featured in the recommendation lists cannot pay for placement, according to company statements provided to The Verge.

Metropolitan Rollout and Local Hotspots

Must Eat is rolling out initially in select regions, covering New York City, Los Angeles, and the San Francisco Bay Area. Users can access the guide through the main search bar, the Local feed, individual restaurant pages, and location links attached to videos. Prominent spots featured in New York include Golden Diner, known for its viral pancakes, alongside reservations-heavy locations like Semma and Via Carota.
