Dubai: A screening campaign to detect diabetes will be conducted everywhere in the UAE, officials said. Also, centers will be started everywhere. The project aims to promote healthy lifestyle choices, reinforce the importance of early detection and create a supportive environment for managing diabetes. The Health and Defense Ministry, which launched the scheme yesterday (Thursday) afternoon, said officials said it would be the first of its kind in the country.

The National Prediabetes and Diabetes Screening Program comes at a time when the country is continuously struggling to reduce the number of people diagnosed with the disease. Dr, Executive Director of Community Health Sector at Abu Dhabi Public Health Center said regular check-ups and access to health services are paramount not only to detect diabetes but also to identify pre-diabetes stages and provide key interventions. Omniyat Al Hajeri said. Diabetes can be combated by improving lifestyle habits, eating a healthy diet, being physically active, and using medications to prevent diabetes if necessary.

The campaign will run for one year, with screenings at public and private workplaces across the UAE. According to the latest figures available from the World Health Organization, 422 million people worldwide suffer from diabetes. Majority are from low and middle income families. About 1.5 million deaths occur every year. People with diabetes should eat plenty of vegetables and avoid fried and sweet foods.

Diabetes can cause kidney failure, heart attack, blindness, stroke, and loss of limbs when a person’s blood sugar levels reach dangerously high levels. Type 2 is the most common form of diabetes in the UAE. Smoking and obesity are linked to the disease, with doctors blaming a sedentary lifestyle and high consumption of junk food.
