Ukraine: Russian attack on Chernihiv – 2024-04-18 08:34:34

The Russian siege of Ukraine continues, with fighting raging on several fronts.

According to reports, at least 9 people were killed and many others injured in a triple strike this morning in the city of Chernihiv.

According to the regional governor of the Chernihiv region, north of UkrainianVyacheslav Chows at least 9 people were killed and over 20 were injured.

“There are 8 dead and 18 injured after Russian missile strikes in Chernihiv. Search and rescue operations are continuing,” Acting Mayor Oleksandr Lomako said on Telegram.

At 09.03 local time (and Greek time), “three explosions occurred in the city”, Lomako had earlier stated on a television station, hitting a multi-storey building. “Unfortunately, Russia continues terrorist activities against civilians and civilian infrastructure, as the strike in Chernihiv confirms once again,” Lomako told Ukrainian TV. He stated that several buildings, civilian infrastructure and many private vehicles were damaged.

The head of the regional hospital in Chernihiv said that at least 18 injured people had been taken there. Other injured citizens were taken to other hospitals, he said, calling on residents to donate blood.

Videos posted on social media, the authenticity of which has not been cross-checked, showed flames and plumes of black smoke rising above the historic city, which is about 150 kilometers from the capital Kiev.

Russia, which denies targeting civilians, invaded Ukraine in February 2022. It has fired thousands of missiles and drones at Ukrainian towns and villages, in attacks that have killed hundreds of civilians.

In recent weeks, Russia has stepped up its attacks on Ukrainian cities, targeting the country’s energy sector and other critical infrastructure.

According to newsit, Andriy Germak, chief of staff of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, today reiterated Kiev’s call for more anti-aircraft defenses.

Chernihiv, one of Ukraine’s oldest cities founded more than 1,000 years ago, had nearly 300,000 residents before the Russian invasion two years ago. It is about 60 kilometers from the border with Russia’s ally Belarus.
