Ukrainian Troops Report Connection Problems with Elon Musk’s Starlink Internet Service Amid Increase in Russian Use

Ukrainian Troops Face Internet Connection Issues with Starlink Service

A recent report suggests that Ukrainian front-line troops are experiencing connection problems with the Starlink internet service, owned by Elon Musk, which is used to operate Kyiv’s fleet of attack drones. This comes at a time when Russian use of the Starlink devices has increased, despite being prohibited by US sanctions.

According to Ukrainian soldiers stationed across the front lines, connection speeds have dropped in recent months, coinciding with a rise in Russian sightings of the satellite internet service. Russian crowdfunders claim to have successfully bypassed sanctions and purchased the devices in third countries.

The reason for the deteriorating service is unclear, and both Starlink and Musk declined to comment on the matter. However, troops and analysts believe that there may be more Starlink devices deployed in contested areas, impacting connection speeds.

The Starlink internet service has provided a significant advantage to Ukraine’s military since the 2022 invasion. It allows for real-time drone feeds and communication in areas where traditional cellphone service has been disrupted due to combat.

Operators in the Zaporizhzhia area have reported issues with the service, including bad quality connection, frequent need for reboots, and decreasing speeds. Adverse weather has been considered a possible factor, although similar issues have been reported by units across the front lines.

Another drone operator also reported issues with the service, stating that the speed had decreased by half since January. There have been allegations that the Russians have been buying Starlink devices through neutral countries and using them on the front lines.
