“A bit like medical assistance in dying, it’s a project that we should put as a priority,” said Christian Dubé on Wednesday, following the tabling of a bill by Liberal MP André Fortin.

The Minister mentioned the possibility of studying the file next fall.

“If we can improve the possibility for patients to have organ donations, I think we should look at it in a non-partisan way,” he said.

André Fortin reintroduced a 2019 bill on Wednesday to amend the Civil Code of Quebec so that an adult “is presumed to have authorized the removal of organs and tissues from his body following his death”.

The measure would not apply to minors.

“If we wanted to signify the refusal, we would only have to sign the health insurance card, so exactly the opposite of the process that is in place at the moment,” explained the Liberal MP at a press briefing on Wednesday. .

In Nova Scotia, this measure has increased the number of organ donations by nearly 40%, according to Mr. Fortin. “If we might do the same in Quebec, it would be a major step forward,” he says.
