Update on Hepatitis A Outbreak: Frozen Organic Strawberries from Baja California – Facts, Symptoms, and Vaccine Information

Given the rumors on social networks regarding patients with Hepatitis A in Nuevo León that would be related to frozen organic strawberries and imported from Baja California, Dr. Michelle Juarezcoordinator of Medical Centers in Guadalupe, ruled out cases in the city.

“At the moment no cases have arrived in Mexico, the cases right now are in Canada and the United States, so far there have been 17 cases of Hepatitis A due to these strawberries in the United States and 12 cases in Canada.

“At the moment it has not arrived in Mexico, it is related to Mexico because those strawberries come from Baja California, Mexico, so that is why the issue is there, but so far we have not had any reports,” he reported.

The public health specialist explained that the symptoms of Hepatitis A they appear up to two weeks later, a disease that he compared to Covid-19.

“Unfortunately, Hepatitis A is asymptomatic, it is a virus to relate it to because I think people are very clear regarding what the covid was, hepatitis is the same virus, we can attract it with contaminated food, with people who have that virus they can contagious, when talking together.

“It takes 15 days to show symptoms, so we can be contaminated, have the hepatitis A virus and we can’t realize it,” he explained.

He said that in addition to being contagious y asymptomaticthere is only treatment for the later symptoms.

He clarified that in Mexico a vaccine is applied in two doses during the first months of life and that also deals with the disease.
