US midterm elections to determine control of United States Congress

About 210 million registered American voters head to the polls on November 3 to determine control of the United States Congress, setting the legislative boundaries for Donald Trump’s presidency halfway through his four-year term. aljazeera.com reported that while Trump is not personally on the ballot, every single seat in the House of Representatives and more than a third of the Senate are being contested, rendering the midterm contest a direct referendum on the administration’s performance.

The Balance of Power in the House

Republicans currently hold a narrow majority in the House of Representatives, leading with 218 seats to the Democrats’ 214, alongside one independent aligning with Republicans and two vacant seats. Because House members serve two-year terms, all 435 seats are up for grabs. To seize control of the chamber, Democrats need a net gain of just three seats.

According to Todd Belt, a professor of political management at George Washington University, roughly 35 House races will ultimately decide the majority. Belt noted that while Republican-led redistricting has given the GOP an advantage in nine additional districts, Democrats could still pick up about 15 seats. If Democrats capture the chamber, all non-government funding legislation will grind to a halt, severely limiting Trump’s domestic agenda.

Early Tallies May Create Misleading Red Mirage

Belt warned that early tallies could create a misleading “red mirage” in states that count in-person Republican votes before mail-in ballots.
