US military draws up options for renewed attacks on Iran

The US military has drawn up options for renewed attacks on Iran following the November 3 US midterm elections, raising the prospect of another round of major fighting in a war approaching its eighth month, according to The Hill. Operational plans are currently maintained by US Central Command (CENTCOM) to execute subsequent military actions should the White House grant permission, while strategic planners have formulated a series of alternatives for Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth.

Military Preparations and Deployments

These preparations coincide with the United States dispatching a third carrier strike group—the USS Theodore Roosevelt—along with approximately 10,000 extra troops and the 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit to the Middle East prior to the conclusion of November. An intelligence dispatch was transmitted on Friday by Director of National Intelligence Jay Clayton to Secretary of State Marco Rubio, indicating that Iranian initiatives to target American personnel had escalated significantly, with advanced lethal plots underway both within the Middle East and elsewhere. The Department of State subsequently ordered staffing reductions at several regional embassies amid the warnings.

Regional Escalation and Iranian Response

Vessels in the oil tanker sector have faced a mounting wave of Iranian aggression, with October standing out as the most destructive month for maritime assaults near the Strait of Hormuz since the outbreak of the US-Israel conflict in February. Citing the semi-official Tasnim news agency, the military forces of Iran reported on Sunday that they successfully intercepted and brought down a domestically manufactured LUCAS drone belonging to the US above the southern port city of Bandar Abbas. Iranian security officials reported to the Reuters news agency that Tehran has drawn up plans to target undersea communications cables in the Gulf if US and Israeli attacks resume. In a declared transition toward an offensive military framework, Tehran cautioned that any nations accommodating military installations utilized for American assaults risk becoming legitimate targets.
