What to Watch: ‘Proud Jewish Boy,’ Jon Hamm’s ‘American Hostage,’ and Netflix’s ‘A Couple of Lies

An expanded version of the documentary Proud Jewish Boy is broadcasting on KAN 11 in two parts on November 7 and November 9, 2026. Directed by Isri Halpern, the film examines the 1938 assassination of German diplomat Ernst vom Rath by 17-year-old Jewish refugee Herschel Grynszpan, an event the Nazi regime exploited as a pretext for Kristallnacht.

The two-part broadcast arrives roughly coinciding with the anniversary of Kristallnacht, the violent pogrom that marked a major escalation toward the Holocaust. jpost.com reported that the documentary won the Best Israeli Documentary Award at the Haifa International Film Festival last year. It traces the trajectory of Grynszpan, who was born in 1921 in Hanover to Polish Jewish parents who lived in Germany for decades without receiving citizenship.

The Historical Trajectory of Herschel Grynszpan

Like tens of thousands of other individuals classified as Polish nationals, Grynszpan’s family existed in legal limbo once the Nazi party assumed power. In October 1938, the German government abruptly expelled more than 17,000 Polish Jews, dumping them at the Polish border. Grynszpan’s parents ended up stranded in severe conditions in the border town of Zbaszyn.

Living illegally in Paris as a stateless teenager, Grynszpan walked into the German Embassy on November 7, 1938, asked to see an official, and shot Ernst vom Rath. The minor diplomat died two days later, and Grynszpan offered no resistance upon his arrest. The Nazi regime immediately framed the act as evidence of an international Jewish conspiracy. When France fell to German forces in 1940, Grynszpan was transferred into Nazi custody.

The regime initially planned a high-profile show trial to anchor Grynszpan at the center of its antisemitic propaganda. However, documents unearthed years later revealed that Grynszpan likely told German interrogators that he and his victim shared a sexual relationship. Such a revelation would have severely embarrassed the Nazi leadership during a public proceeding. Grynszpan subsequently vanished into the Nazi prison system.

Because very few photographs of Grynszpan survive, director Isri Halpern commissioned illustrative artwork from David Polonsky and Michael Faust, who previously worked on Waltz with Bashir and Legend of Destruction. As Halpern explained in an interview regarding the subject’s ultimate fate, “We don’t know exactly how he died. But we know why people stopped asking.” The upcoming KAN 11 broadcast will provide additional depth regarding the canceled show trial and surrounding historical events.
