Why People-Centric Leadership Is the Future of Work

In a recent essay, journalist Elaine Pofeldt detailed her travel logistics as a single parent to attend the Summit for People-Centric Leadership in Phoenix. The event, scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 22, marks the first conference hosted by the Social Capital Insider, a publication at the Dave Alexander Center for Social Capital.

Journalistic Collaboration and the Human Cost of Corporate Edicts

Pofeldt helped plan the conference alongside fellow journalists Chris Benguhe, known for his work with People magazine, and Rae Anne Marsh, an editor at In Business, Phoenix. According to the essay, the core mission of the gathering centers on recognizing and reporting on organizations that prioritize employees, customers, and communities.

Pofeldt notes that while putting people first sounds straightforward, the ongoing stress and trauma employees experience under corporate edicts make true worker-centric environments remarkably rare. High-traffic stories on building family-friendly workplaces consistently draw reader interest as companies issue directives that degrade daily working conditions.

Exploring One-Person Businesses and the Future of Work

To counter toxic corporate environments and provide viable alternatives, Pofeldt has dedicated a significant portion of her reporting to one-person operations and tiny businesses—defined as ventures with fewer than 20 employees and typically fewer than five. Many of these million-dollar businesses started when founders left the corporate grind, escaped toxic bosses, and scaled successful side hustles to regain control of their time.

The Phoenix summit focuses primarily on enterprises, large companies, and nonprofits, but Pofeldt's sessions address the wider impact of the million-dollar, one-person business trend. At 8:40 a.m. on the conference schedule, she is slated to riff with Emily Tryon—founder of Esthetic Solutions Med Spa and Esthetic Breakthrough Training and Consulting—and Dave McLurg, a private investor at The Board International who champions the Encourage philosophy across his portfolio companies.

Later in the day at 1 p.m., Pofeldt will examine what scalable organizations can learn from the solo business boom in an era defined by artificial intelligence. She argues that leaders of larger entities cannot afford to ignore these macroeconomic shifts.

Speakers and the Path Forward in Phoenix

The conference lineup features prominent figures including Omani Carson, founder and chairman of Carson Group; Vince Barsolo, CEO of Televerde; and Scott Davison, CEO of OneAmerica Financial Planners. Additional speakers include Lyneir Richardson, founder of the Center for Urban Entrepreneurship at Rutgers University, and Frederica Peterson, author of Inquisitive Leadership.

Pofeldt extended an open invitation to Phoenix-area residents for the Thursday, Oct. 22 event, noting that a limited number of free tickets remained available through direct messaging on her platform or via LinkedIn.
