Williams F1 Alex Albon “Comparable to McLaren at a pure pace”[F1-Gate .com]

Williams F1’s Alexander Albon says the updated FW44 was “almost in line” with McLaren, despite finishing out of points at the Austrian Grand Prix last weekend.

Alex Albon, who started the race on the 15th grid, was in 10th place in both the first stint on the medium and the second stint on the hard.

However, at the end of the race, Valtteri Bottas (Alfa Romeo) and then Fernando Alonso (Alpine F1 Team) were overtaken in quick succession to take the checkered position in 12th place.

“I took the risk and was bold, but Valtteri was a little faster than us, so I pushed the tires a little too hard to hold him down,” said Alexander Albon.

“I knew what I was doing wasn’t tire friendly, but I was trying to stay close to him. I took the risk and pushed for points. It didn’t work very well for us, I still feel it was a good race. “

In the race, Alex Albon fought Lando Norris and Daniel Ricciardo’s McLaren in their respective stints.

Alex Albon couldn’t overtake McLaren, but he felt his pace was on par with McLaren’s MCL36. This was a promising sign of the efficiency of the latest Williams F1 upgrade.

“The whole race was more or less in line with McLaren,” said Alexander Albon.

“I hit some traffic here and there, but I was really happy with the pace and definitely took a step forward this weekend.”

“This was the first full-scale race with a new aerodynamic update and I learned a lot from it so I should be able to look at the data and come back stronger in France.”
