Xiaomi has canceled its anticipated 18 Ultra smartphone ahead of production due to anticipated high manufacturing costs.
Xiaomi 18 Ultra Canceled Over Cost Concerns
Smartphone manufacturers typically build their Ultra flagships around photography, and Xiaomi’s lineup had previously reached its peak with the Xiaomi 17 Ultra, a model that also received an exclusive Leica variant. Plans for the successor, the Xiaomi 18 Ultra, pointed toward a no-compromise camera phone equipped with three separate 200-megapixel cameras.
Those plans have now stalled. Digital Chat Station reports that the device was canceled right before entering production. Internal assessments concluded that the projected retail price would climb too high, severely hurting market adoption and sales volume.
Compared to the Xiaomi 17 Ultra launch price of 950 euros in China, the new generation represented an increase of nearly 50 percent. Analysts and internal reviewers determined that such a steep price point was commercially unviable for the standard entry tier, especially before accounting for European import costs and taxes.

The Unbuilt Hardware Specifications of the 18 Ultra
Had the project moved forward, the specifications would have positioned the handset among the most ambitious imaging devices on the market. The front would have featured a flat display surrounded by uniform bezels measuring approximately 1 mm on all four sides.
The optical system formed the core of the proposal, featuring hardware designed to rival high-end dedicated cameras.
- A primary 200-megapixel camera using a 1/1.12-inch LOFIC sensor.
- An ultra-wide camera utilizing a 1/1.56-inch sensor.
- A periscope telephoto lens featuring a 1/1.28-inch LOFIC sensor and continuous optical zoom.
- A multi-spectral sensor alongside support for external magnetic lenses.
- Symmetric dual stereo speakers and a 0916 haptic motor.
The cancellation aligns with summer reports indicating that the broader Xiaomi 18 generation would be streamlined to include only three models: the standard Xiaomi 18, the Xiaomi 18 Pro, and the Xiaomi 18 Pro Max. Industry watchers note that while the Ultra branding is absent from this cycle, supply chain sources anticipate its return with the Xiaomi 19 Ultra between late 2027 and early 2028, a window when component pricing is expected to stabilize.

Xiaomi 18 Pro Max Emerges as the Definitive Global Flagship
With the Ultra variant shelved, Xiaomi 18 Pro Max steps into the role of top-tier flagship for international markets. The global variant surfaced recently in the Geekbench AI database carrying the model number 2611FPNFAG, where the trailing letter confirms its international destination.
The benchmarked prototype runs on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 processor paired with 12 GB of RAM. While Chinese domestic configurations offer up to 16 GB of RAM, regional availability for memory tiers and battery specifications remains subject to final localization adjustments. Domestic Chinese versions of the Pro Max feature an 8,500 mAh battery, while the standard Pro variant carries a 7,000 mAh cell, though internal space constraints in global models may prompt minor adjustments ahead of retail availability.
Both the Pro and Pro Max models are slated to run Android 17 out of the box, layered beneath the newly introduced HyperOS 4 interface.
