Cadena D1 surpassed Almacenes Éxito as the main retailer in the country, according to Mall & Retail

According to the 2022 Retail Map made by Mall & RetailD1 supermarkets became the main retail sales chain in Colombia, surpassing Almacenes Éxito, which has always led the way in this ranking.

As an example of the effect, D1’s operating income for 2021 totaled $9.91 billion, a 32% growth compared to 2020 sales. For its part, Almacenes Éxito recorded operating income of $8.58 billion, which translated into a positive variation of 6.6%.

It should be noted that as an economic conglomerate, Grupo Éxito’s sales, including its Almacenes Éxito, Carulla, Surtimayorista, Superinter and Surtimax brands, continue to rank first with revenues close to $12.28 billion and a growth of 5.5% compared to 2020. .

Third place, after D1, is occupied by Grupo Colombiana de Comercio (Alkosto), whose revenues the previous year stood at $9.09 billion, with growth of 21.1%.

In fourth place was Cencosud, owner of the Jumbo and Metro supermarket brands, and the chain focused on the home segment: Easy, whose revenues totaled $4 billion the previous year.

Referring to the ranks, Leopoldo Vargas Brand, manager of Mall & Retail, stated that “hard discount formats are experiencing a boom due to the importance for households in times of crisis, the economy in their purchases. D1’s value offer has been adapted to the tastes and preferences of Colombian families, which currently represents 12% of the basket of mass consumer goods in our country”.
