A satellite brighter than the stars in our sky

2023-10-14 16:40:35

If you’ve looked up at the sky, you may have noticed a very bright new light in our sky: the BlueWalker 3 satellite.

It has barely been in our sky for a year and it is already causing problems… The BlueWalker 3 satellite, used for mobile telephony, does not fail to annoy more than one in the world of astronomers, that this either amateurs or professionals.

The cause of this excitement? Light pollution that places BlueWalker 3 at the same level of brightness as the brightest stars in our sky, such as Procyon, in the constellation Canis, and the seventh brightest star from Earth, as explained by the English-speaking site BGR.

But it doesn’t stop there since, not content with shining in visible light, BlueWalker 3 also poses some problems in terms of waves, with a very particular radio frequency which is extremely close to that used in radio astronomy.

Although the problem can easily be resolved by placing BlueWalker 3 in an orbit further from Earth, this still greatly illustrates the problem of space pollution with an Earth orbit increasingly cluttered by objects that transform quite quickly. into useless debris…
