A seventeen-year-old student was electrocuted by a bare wire inside his school in Patras on Wednesday (27.03.24).
17-year-old Ilias spoke to Live News and described what he experienced at the Demenikos High School where he studies, realizing that he was lucky in his misfortune.
Shortly before school, the 17-year-old with two of his friends started going down the stairs towards the entrance. Suddenly the current from a bare wire of a lamp hit him in the hand and naturally, there was a disturbance in the school.
“At 12:30 in the school, I went down the stairs to go to the courtyard and there was a lamp and it was a bare cable and as I was going down I touched it and the electricity went out,” he said.
“After two minutes I went down to the courtyard, my arm was blackened, my body was numb and I was traumatized by the electric shock”, he emphasized.
“I didn’t feel any dizziness, only my hand hurt a lot and from the shock I jumped up the stairs and couldn’t hold on,” he commented.
The student was conscious but in a state of shock. His mother was notified and the 17-year-old was taken to hospital.
“I went to Agios Andras, the hospital with my mother and because she was not on duty, we went to Rio by ambulance,” said the student.
“He rested his hand on the wall”
A bare wire coming out of a hole in the wall there was a bolted light, exit light, the ones with the battery. He had removed the light, it was the bare wire on the wall. He put his hand on the wall when they were all going down the stairs,” said the 17-year-old’s father.
“The specific school complex is a relatively new school and all the necessary work has been done on all the facilities, including the electrical ones, while early this morning the services of the Municipality went to the school to repair the damage,” said the Deputy Mayor of Education of the municipality of Patreon, Katerina Simou.
Unknown persons destroyed the security light
The inspection at the school showed that the security light had been damaged by unknown persons and apparently was not repaired.
“The security light, which works when there is a power outage, broke during school hours. The question is how exactly the security lamp broke”, added K. Simou.
“It was up to the shoulder, his palm was blackened and he was scared because he was closing his fingers and they were opening by themselves. He didn’t touch metal luckily, he didn’t touch bars and we’re lucky,” said the child’s father.
The competent crews of the municipality repaired the lamp, with technicians expressing doubts about the way the accident happened.
“The incident concerns a safety light, which was placed in the stairwell area based on the technical specifications from the construction of the school and at a height that cannot be reached by a person, without making an effort and using a ladder. As we were informed, there was vandalism at the light fixture, with the known results”, stated the self-monitoring department of the municipality of Patras.
The 17-year-old, however, emphasizes that he did not try to grab the bare cable, but, as he says, it accidentally touched him as he was passing by. After hours of agony, the student returned home healthy and went to school as normal in the morning.
“He could have touched another child because they were all going down the stairs together, the children had contact with each other and he hit them all. The director also came to the hospital, he said that he has informed the municipality. Since he’s fine, you get over it,” said the child’s father.
Technicians from the Municipality did a complete inspection of the school and gave the green light for the continuation of classes, with the 17-year-old who told us about his adventure, trying to leave behind what happened to him.
“My palm found there and blackened my hand”
17-year-old Ilias explained what happened: “I was commenting at that time and there was vandalism to the lamp. My palm found there and blackened my hand. I had seen the cable hanging there for two days. Not sure when it happened. The light was definitely broken. I was with a friend of mine and I was getting off at that time,” he said.
