On Friday, the authorities in Iraqi Kurdistan caught a rare tiger after it fell into a trap in a mountain village and was injured as a result.
The endangered tiger was transferred to the zoo in the city of Dohuk, where one of its legs was amputated after being injured.
Local officials described the appearance of this type of cat in the region as rare.
The official of the Environmental Protection Police in Dohuk, Colonel Jamal Saado, told AFP that the Peshmerga forces were informed, last Wednesday, of finding the tiger after it fell into the trap in the village of Zerza.
The villagers set a trap after realizing that a tiger was attacking their flocks, and devoured about 25 sheep.
The tiger, a 5-year-old Persian, managed to escape from the trap despite being injured, but the villagers helped the police track him down after he was drugged.
Veterinarian Suleiman Tamr, who performed the amputation in Dohuk Park, said on Friday that the animal weighed between 90 and 100 kilograms.
Tamer, who also heads an animal protection association in Iraqi Kurdistan, added that the condition of the tiger will be monitored, and if it is not possible to return it to the wild, it will live in the zoo.
Persian tigers are a subspecies of tigers in Turkey, Iran and Afghanistan, rare and listed by the International Union for Conservation of Nature as endangered.
It is believed that less than 1,000 tigers of this species are currently in the wild, and about 200 more in zoos.
