Aldi renovation forces Torney butcher shop in Neubrandenburg to close

The Torney-Landfleischerei branch on Platanenstraße in Neubrandenburg has closed temporarily because its adjacent Aldi discount supermarket shut down for modernization work at the beginning of October, the Nordkurier reported.

Market Impact

  • Business operations face structural pressure following the company’s insolvency filing in August.

Anchor Tenant Modernization Triggers Closure

Large blue containers currently sit outside the Aldi branch on Platanenstraße in the Lindenberg Süd district. Workers have been clearing items out of the market since early October as part of the discount chain’s ongoing network renewal across Neubrandenburg.

The neighboring Torney-Landfleischerei is feeling the immediate impact of the construction work. We are rebuilding our branch on Platanenstraße. For that we need a bit of time and say goodbye to you until March, the butcher shop announced on social media.

Loss of Customer Traffic Disrupts Viability

The closure affects the butcher shop directly because of its reliance on the neighboring grocery footprint. It is not our branch that is being remodeled, but rather the Aldi market at the location, Torney managing director Michael Witt clarified in an interview with the Nordkurier. The Aldi market serves as an anchor tenant that drives foot traffic to the shared site.

As long as the market is closed, this clientele is missing, and the branch cannot be operated economically during this time, Witt explained. Customers looking to purchase goods during the renovation phase are being asked to visit alternative locations.

Corporate Restructuring and Alternative Outlets

The Torney-Landfleischerei enterprise, headquartered in Pripsleben, filed for insolvency in August with plans to restructure under self-administration. Administrator and lawyer Michael Busching previously told the Nordkurier that the move aims to organize economic liabilities while protecting jobs and regional sales outlets for the roughly 100 employees.

Management has not yet clarified whether the temporary shutdown of the Platanenstraße branch is directly connected to the insolvency proceedings or how staff members will be deployed during the multi-month construction phase. Normal operations at the location are scheduled to resume in March once the Aldi market reopens.

Branch Location Status Operational Impact
Platanenstraße (Neubrandenburg) Temporarily Closed Suspended until March due to Aldi remodeling
Linden Street Open Alternative regional option (~2 km away)
East City / Sponholzer Street / Friedrich-Engels-Ring Open Alternative regional options for customers

Customers can continue utilizing the company’s other branches, situated roughly two kilometers away on Lindenstraße, as well as locations in the Oststadt, Sponholzer Straße, and at the Friedrich-Engels-Ring, until the Platanenstraße site reopens in March.
