This Saturday, a driver caused an accident with impressive material consequences in Wommelgem, in the province of Antwerp. At the exit of a bend, a gray car indeed left the road and hit a motorcycle which was parked along the roadway. Following this impact, another parked vehicle was struck and landed 15 meters away. But that’s not all. In the aftermath, two other vehicles were hit. According to Het Nieuwsblad, four parked vehicles were hit in total.
The driver escaped unscathed. Four days after this spectacular accident, we know more about the circumstances of it. And they are, to say the least, special. Indeed, according to Het Nieuwsbald, the driver who caused this “carnage” is actually a mechanic who was driving around with… the car of one of his clients.
Mathias learned through the press that it was his vehicle that was the cause of the crash: “At first, I couldn’t believe it, because my car was supposed to be in the garage for maintenance before technical control. At least that’s what I thought…”
Because indeed, his mechanic, who tested positive for alcohol after an accident, had been guilty of what some call a “joyful journey”, from the English “joyride”, and which designates the fact of doing a ride with a vehicle that is not his.
Mathias and his mechanic had known each other for a long time. Obviously, the mechanic had no more car after an accident a few weeks ago and therefore borrowed that of one of his clients. With the consequences that we know… On Saturday evening, the mechanic called Mathias’ companion to apologize: “He said that he, in tears, that he greatly regretted what had happened. He said he fell asleep and only had a few beers. But I can’t believe it.”
