Dr Emma Searle, a consultant hematologist at Christie NHS Foundation Trust in Manchester, has revealed that a batch of new, yet-to-be-named, clinically-tried immunotherapy drugs has shown that some patients, such as those with multiple myeloma, are seeing a decrease in blood pressure. Their cancer rates are at undetectable levels.
She said: “The results of this type of trial, using drugs that enable the immune system to see and attack myeloma, are incredibly impressive. Using drugs alone, we are seeing responses in more than two-thirds of patients who are left with no standard treatment options.”
And she added: “When the drugs are used together … we see responses in more than 90% of patients,” indicating that immunotherapy drugs, which are already used in some other types of cancer, will “completely” change the face of leukemia treatment. Sun.
Dr. Searle explained that patients with multiple myeloma used to survive three to five years following diagnosis, although the most recent data indicate that half of patients are still alive following 10 years.
