Chelsea defeat Milan and set course for round of 16 – Tomori’s emergency brake initiates victory

After the clear 0-3 defeat in London last week, AC Milan was looking to make amends against Chelsea in front of their home crowd. Both teams started the game with commitment, the game shares were distributed relatively evenly.

After an opening phase without scoring chances, the game picked up speed in the 18th minute when the German referee Daniel Siebert suddenly pointed to the point in Milan’s penalty area (18th). What happened? Fikayo Tomori grabbed Mason Mount’s shoulder in the box and the Englishman ran on but then went down and was awarded the penalty. On top of that, the Berlin referee showed Tomori the red card – a decision that can at least be questioned.

The penalty was converted by Jorginho in the usual manner on the bottom left (21st). Olivier Giroud and Mount had also picked up a yellow card before taking the penalty (20th).

Milan plunge Juventus deeper into crisis – Allegri under pressure

Milan tried to respond directly, but Giroud narrowly missed the goal angle after a fine cross from Brahim Diaz from close range and thus also the equalizer (27th).

Tatarusanu prevents total failure

In a game that continued to be intense, Raheem Sterling (29′), Matteo Gabbia (33′) and Rade Krunic (36′) also saw the yellow card. In terms of sport, ex-Dortmunder and new Chelsea signing Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang caused a stir. In the 34th minute, Mount directed a pass from Mateo Kovacic into the Gabonese’s run, who completed the goal from just a few yards into the near corner to make it 2-0 for Chelsea (34′).

A minute before the end of regular time, Ciprian Tatarusanu scraped a low shot from Mount out of the bottom left corner and in this way prevented the 0:3 from Milan’s perspective (44th).

After the break, both teams came out of the dressing room with momentum. Sandro Tonali set the first scent mark with an attempt from a tight angle, but Kepa Arrizabalaga was there with a foot defense (49th). Just a minute later, Conor Gallagher, who came at the break, rounded Gabbia and Tatarusanu, but then also hit the right side netting from a tight angle (50′).

Just four minutes later, the Romanian in the AC Milan goal reflexively repelled an attempt by Aubameyang, who had put his foot in a Kovacic volley and deflected dangerously (54′).

Then various changes in the already tough game finally took the flow of the game. Chilwell (69′) and Chalobah (71′) missed their goal with distance attempts, Milan hardly managed anything offensively. So it remained at the deserved 2-0 for Chelsea.

The voices:

Graham Potter (Trainer FC Chelsea): “It’s not easy to come here and win. Respect to my players, they did a good job. We were definitely lucky when Milan were sent off, but beyond that it was a good performance from my team .I couldn’t really see the penalty scene from my point of view so I’ll have to look at that later. But I think Tomori has a hand on Mount. To have kept a clean sheet is fantastic for us.We scored finished it very balanced and mature.”

Ismael Bennacer (AC Mailand): “It wasn’t a good night. It was tough for us after being sent off. But now we have to keep our heads up and look ahead.”

The tweet about the game:

Not only in Giuseppe Meazza, but also on the net, the controversial referee performance of the German team around main referee Daniel Siebert caused heated debates.

That was noticeable: Milan disappointed outnumbered

Both teams led the game extremely physically and gave their opponents nothing. The many heated duels, however, always resulted in fouls, which in turn did not really allow for a real flow of the game.

In contrast to last week’s clash, the Rossoneri presented themselves more confident and improved. The penalty and the dismissal then turned the game in favor of Chelsea. In the last 15 minutes of the first half, the English had almost 75% possession of the ball, the Rossoneri could hardly get hold of it.

Despite a short flash in the pan after the change of sides, Milan were completely disappointing on the offensive and managed only one shot at Kepa’s goal over the entire duration of the game (Divock Origi/90.+1). Although the hosts were outnumbered for almost 70 minutes, they still lacked bite in the forward movement. Top scorer Rafael Leao saw no land against Chelsea’s back line and left the field after 80 minutes. After all, AC showed morale and played along until the end.

The stats: 10

Referee Siebert drew a card a total of ten times during the game. Nine times it was yellow, once he picked up red and put Tomori off the field. Some decisions – especially the red card – were quite controversial.
