Coolpad Launches Cool X Wide: A Budget Wide-Screen Android Smartphone

Coolpad Launches the Cool X Wide Smartphone with a 16:10 Display in China

Chinese manufacturer Coolpad has introduced the Cool X Wide, a widescreen budget smartphone featuring a 6.38-inch LCD display with a 16:10 aspect ratio, a 90Hz refresh rate, and HD resolution, gsmarena.com reported. The device departs from traditional candybar handset dimensions by measuring 150.3 x 94.5 x 8.95mm, giving it a significantly broader 94.5mm width than the standard 70mm to 80mm profile found on most mobile phones.

The hardware architecture relies on a 6nm MediaTek Helio G99 octa-core processor clocked at 2.2GHz, paired with a Mali-G57 MC2 GPU. Memory and storage configurations range across 8GB or 12GB of LPDDR4X RAM alongside 128GB or 256GB of UFS 2.2 internal storage. Users can further expand storage capacity using a microSD card slot supporting up to 256GB.

Cool X Wide Features 50MP Camera and 4,600mAh Battery

Imaging capabilities on the Cool X Wide center on a 50MP main rear camera accompanied by a macro sensor. Coolpad has not confirmed the total number of lenses housed in the horizontal pill-shaped rear camera module, nor has the company released any technical specifications regarding the front-facing selfie camera.

Energy is supplied by a 4,600mAh internal battery. While the capacity is documented, Coolpad has omitted any details regarding supported wired charging speeds. The handset runs on Android out of the box, supports dual SIM dual standby with full network compatibility, and includes a side-mounted fingerprint scanner.

Cool X Wide Costs $150 on JD.Com

The device is listed on JD.com for pre-order in White, Black, and Red colorways. Outlets such as Memeburn and Gizmochina report an expected price tag of CNY 999, roughly translating to $150 USD. This positions the hardware as an economical alternative to Huawei’s Pura X View, a premium widescreen device launched in September at CNY 5,999 (~$895 USD) that achieved 180,000 unit sales on its first day.

Software implementation varies across reported regional and technical breakdowns. While gsmarena.com notes standard Android 16 deployment, Gizmochina and Memeburn highlight the inclusion of DroiClaw 3—alternatively referenced as DroiClaw Zhuge 3—an AI-native operating system developed by Shanghai Droi Technology. Built with Rust core services handling system operations, security permissions, and communications, the software is designed to interface directly with the wider 16:10 display format. Exact pricing, official global availability schedules, and specific network bands remain undisclosed.

FreemeOS Integrates AI into the Operating System Core

Leaked images show a thicker bottom bezel than Huawei’s device alongside a textured back panel featuring a pattern resembling the finish on the Pura X View. Shanghai Droi Technology was founded in 2008, and its FreemeOS software runs on more than 200 million devices. Independent testing will be required to determine what the AI sees and where that data goes when it taps through applications.
