A 50-year-old Florida mother was arrested at an airport after authorities said she left her four minor children unsupervised at home for days to travel to Las Vegas for work, according to the Osceola County Sheriff’s Office.

Irene Miller departed for Las Vegas on October 18, 2026, and was scheduled to return on October 23, 2026, leaving her children—aged nine, 11, 12, and 14—without an adult staying overnight at their Kissimmee home, according to Fox News. The situation came to light on Wednesday, October 21, when law enforcement received a 911 call just after 8:30 p.m. from one of the children reporting that her nine-year-old brother had suffered an injury when a dumbbell fell on his head, as reported by NBC News.

Paramedics transported the injured boy to Celebration Hospital, where he received treatment and was later released. When deputies contacted Miller by phone during her absence, she stated she was working in Las Vegas and initially refused to return, reportedly berating her eldest son over the phone for calling 911 while deputies were present, according to Bored Panda.

The Babysitter Arrangement and Airport Arrest

Investigators learned that while Miller had arranged for a babysitter to travel from Tampa each morning to help the children get ready for school and check on them afterward, the sitter’s duties did not require staying overnight, according to the Osceola County Sheriff’s Office.

As deputies investigated the scene, they contacted the children’s father, Mark Miller, who agreed to take the children into his care. Detectives then arranged to meet Irene Miller as she exited her flight from Las Vegas on Friday morning, October 23, 2026, at Orlando International Airport. Body camera footage showed deputies approaching her on the jet bridge, escorting her through the terminal in handcuffs, and booking her into the Orange County Jail on four counts of child neglect without great bodily harm, as detailed by The Sun.

The Osceola County Sheriff’s Office will not tolerate child neglect, Sheriff Chris Blackmon said in a statement. These cases will be investigated, and charges will be brought against the parents who are not properly supervising or caring for their children.

Family Context and Current Living Situation

Following her arrest, Miller was released from jail on a $4,000 surety bond. Court records indicate the parents were undergoing a messy divorce, having filed on September 17 after 15 years of marriage. Mark Miller was previously charged with criminal battery following an alleged physical altercation outside the children’s school, pleaded not guilty, and was made subject to a restraining order forbidding him from coming within 500 feet of his wife.

Despite the ongoing legal restrictions and a pending court hearing to determine visitation parameters, Mark Miller took custody of the children following the incident. He and the four children are currently living together in a motel room while he attempts to manage his self-employed business, care for the children, and secure legal representation and permanent housing. The exact date of Irene Miller’s upcoming court appearance in Osceola County has not yet been publicly announced, and authorities have not clarified whether she is currently permitted to contact her children.
