Florida Woman Has Medical Debt Erased by Nonprofit

Jen Mattingly of Hillsborough County, Florida, received a letter notifying her that $2,953.06 in medical debt had been purchased and erased by the nonprofit Undue Medical Debt. The relief arrived as recent data shows one in three working-age adults with private health insurance is paying off medical debt over time.

Relief Arrives for Hillsborough County Resident

Mattingly opened the mail expecting another standard medical bill. Instead, the letter stated she no longer owed $2,953.06, an amount she estimated covered at least two emergency room visits.

Her financial strain began during the pandemic amid a health decline involving multiple doctor visits and denied insurance claims. Subsequent hospital visits revealed blood clots in her lungs and a blood-clotting disease, pushing her medical bills into the tens of thousands of dollars.

Medical debt is the No. 1 cause of bankruptcy in America. Mattingly stated she considered filing for bankruptcy because she works in social services and lacks the means to clear such large balances.

How Nonprofit Debt Erasure Operates

The letter came from Undue Medical Debt, a national 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. The group utilizes donations to buy large bundles of medical debt at steep discounts, canceling the obligations for individuals facing financial hardship.

According to the nonprofit, every $1 donated relieves an average of $100 in medical debt. The letter sent to Mattingly described the cancellation as a no-strings-attached gift requiring no repayment and generating no tax liabilities.

Allison Sesso, President and CEO of Undue Medical Debt, told Tampa Bay 28 that the organization seeks not only to eliminate debt, but also to draw attention to broader problems within the health care system. The nonprofit does not accept individual requests for debt relief, though its website provides resources and guidance for people seeking assistance.

Broader Economic Pressures in Healthcare

Mattingly’s situation aligns with broader trends in household finance and healthcare obligations. A September report from the Commonwealth Fund indicated that one in three working-age adults covered by private health insurance is paying off medical debt over time.

The persistent accumulation of medical obligations continues to impact consumer balance sheets across the economy. While programs like Undue Medical Debt provide targeted relief, Americans continue to navigate complex claims denials and mounting hospital invoices.
