Georgia Stanway: From Missed Penalties to Success in Women’s World Cup and FC Bayern

Georgia Stanway scored the goal of the day in their strenuous opening win over Haiti. The Bayern star is probably in the best shape of his life.

Disappointment was written all over Georgia Stanway’s face. The sure-footed penalty taker had just missed the spot-kick that could have put England ahead against Haiti. Keeper Kerly Théus had cleared the penalty kick, which was actually strong, to the corner. But while the Haitians were still celebrating, the video assistant checked the scene – and after looking at the pictures (Théus had moved from the goal line too early) decided to repeat it.

Again Stanway grabbed the ball – and did it better. Left again, but this time lower left, out of reach of Théus. It was to be the only goal of the whole game for the Lionesses, as Dutch coach Sarina Wiegman’s team is called.

Stanway looks back on a successful 12 months

The 2022 European champion celebrated a shaky but successful start to the tournament. The goal at the 2023 Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand was clear right from the start of the group phase: the World Cup title should be aimed for. A good two weeks later, the Lionesses are well on their way to winning the title at the World Championships as well. And Georgia Stanway is set to play a key role in that.

The path among the best teams in the tournament can certainly be described as shaky – despite a group stage with nine points from three games. With a bit of luck, they turned the quarter-finals against Colombia in their favor (2-1), and in the round of 16 against Nigeria, they saved themselves outnumbered on penalties – and also benefited from the weak shots of the opponents.

Speaking of penalties: Stanway also started from the spot again against Nigeria. She was the first to grab the ball and took responsibility – but threw the ball halfway up to the left. A missed shot, which luckily again had no consequences.

The process surrounding the penalty kick is exemplary for the only 24-year-old, who was able to celebrate two great successes within a year. Because after the European Championship triumph last summer, Stanway also secured the championship with FC Bayern at the end of May, to which she had only switched at the beginning of the past season.

In the all-important 11-1 win against Turbine Potsdam on the last day of the game, Stanway was also one of the top scorers and scored the 6-0 win in the meantime. In general, their goal tally reads more than decent in their debut season. She contributed six goals in 21 games this season, as well as three assists – and that as a central midfielder.

The Bayern player only missed one game in the Bundesliga, and that was because of a yellow card suspension. Despite the transition to a new team and a new country, she immediately became a top performer under the new Bayern coach Alexander Straus.

Outstanding qualification

“Before I moved to Munich, many people advised me to be patient, to give myself five or six months to settle down in a new country with a new language. In the end, it was a matter of a few weeks,” said Stanway before the World Cup -Start the “kicker”. “I brought my form from the European Championships to Munich and soon felt at home on the pitch.”
