The branch of the Russian supermarket chain Mere located in Opwijk, Flemish Brabant, will close its doors in mid-October, Mere Belgium posted on Facebook.

The opening of the first Belgian branch of this store had caused controversy, in the midst of the war in Ukraine.

Only three months after the opening of the supermarket, the sign will already close its doors. “Commercially, the store proved to be insufficiently profitable,” explains the chain in its publication. However, Mere Belgium still plans to open ten stores in Brussels, Antwerp, Ghent, Bruges and Leuven.

In the midst of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the opening of this Russian supermarket in Belgium had aroused much criticism.
