IBM Survey: 78% of Brazilian business leaders project investment in technology for 2023

Key technologies include AI, automation, and hybrid cloud; cyber risks, market changes and environmental pressures are driving investments.

São Paulo, February 9, 2023 – A new global survey by IBM reveals that 78% of Brazilian business leaders will invest in technology in the next 12 months – which includes solutions such as AI, automation and hybrid cloud. The percentage is higher than in other countries such as the US, Japan, Germany and the UK.

With this significant perspective for the Brazilian scenario in 2023, the main external factors that are driving investment in technology in the country are cyber risks (32%), market changes (29%) and environmental pressures due to the ESG agenda (26%) . Among the factors that are hampering or slowing down investments in technology, inflation leads with 30%.

The study “Forecasts of Global Investments in Technology”, which IBM commissioned from Morning Consult, brings an overview of investments in technology for Brazilian companies, in the next 12 months and longer forecasts, from two to five years. The survey includes the opinion of 4,000 global business leaders from Brazil, United States, United Kingdom, China, India, Germany, Japan and Canada.

Leadership in 5G and Cloud Deployment in the Years to Come

Regarding the technologies that Brazilian companies intend to implement in the next two years, the main ones are 5G (39%), followed by cloud computing (hybrid, public and private) and green IT solutions (both with 36%), cybersecurity solutions (35%) and IoT Solutions, with 33%.

Regarding emerging technologies that Brazilian leaders believe will change business in the next 3-5 years, there are cloud platforms for industry (31%), followed by digital workers, generative AI, AI-infused cybersecurity and compute storage , all with 29%.

“We see a commitment to technology in different sectors of the country. Financial services, for example, have made a great contribution to investments due to the high competitiveness and transformation of financial operations, in addition to the recent launch of Pix and Open Finance. Another sector is retail, e-commerce was greatly boosted by the pandemic and a large part of this operation is supported by technologies such as the cloud. Finally, I consider the area of ​​services, as companies in the sector have great potential to apply technology to automate business processes using AI to increase efficiency”, said CTO of Technology, Cloud and Cognitive Software at IBM Brazil, Wagner Arnaut.

Investing in sustainability: an unavoidable path

Regarding external factors driving sustainability investments, environmental pressures lead in Brazil – and globally – at 43%, followed by market changes (37%), pressures from legal and regulatory compliance and c-suite directives (both with 32%).

In Brazil, leaders mentioned specific sustainability investments as “solutions that help manage assets, facilities and infrastructure to drive the transition to clean energy, efficient waste management and decarbonization” and “solutions that help drive energy efficiency in computing and IT”, both with 61%.

Finally, globally, investing in more sustainable buildings and energy-efficient computing and IT are among the top sustainability investments planned for the next two years.

Methodology

The survey was conducted by Morning Consult November 15-26, 2022 among a sample of 4,001 business leaders (corporate or IT strategy decision makers) in the US, UK, Brazil, China, India, Germany, Japan and Canada . The interviews were conducted online. Full survey results have a margin of error of plus or minus 2 percentage points.
