Katie Boulter beats Himeno Sakatsume at Japan Open

British player Katie Boulter secured a dominant 6-3, 6-1 victory over Japan’s Himeno Sakatsume at the Japan Open in Osaka on Tuesday, following a rain delay that suspended the opening-round match the previous evening.

Boulter Advances as Swiatek Withdraws from Ningbo Open

  • Boulter advances to face Switzerland’s Viktorija Golubic in the second round, carrying strong momentum from a match where she converted five of nine break points.
  • Wild card entry Sakatsume struggled to capitalize on her chances, managing just one conversion from 13 break opportunities against the British veteran.
  • Meanwhile, Iga Swiatek’s qualification campaign for the WTA Finals suffered a significant setback as the world number nine withdrew from the Ningbo Open due to a thigh injury ahead of the November tournament.

Weather Delays and First-Round Conclusion in Osaka

The fixture at the Japan Open began on Monday with Boulter holding a commanding set and a 3-1 lead over the home favourite, Sakatsume, before inclement weather forced officials to halt play in Osaka. Returning to the court on Tuesday, the 30-летний British competitor maintained her tactical focus to close out the second set decisively and secure the straight-sets win.

Yesterday was a tough spot to end at, Boulter noted following her victory, detailing the mental reset required after the suspension. I wanted to play last night and continue but with the rain, unfortunately, that wasn’t possible. It meant that I had to have the same mindset again today and just try to get over the line and focus on getting through the match. I think I did that. I didn’t want to be out here playing a third set so I’m pleased with today.

Upcoming Second-Round Matchup

With the opening round concluded, Boulter turns her attention to the next stage of the tournament. She is scheduled to face Switzerland’s Viktorija Golubic in the second round in Osaka. The match follows a grueling statistical battle against Sakatsume, where Boulter withstood heavy pressure by defending against 13 break points while ruthlessly exploiting her own opportunities on return.
