LONDON: Commuters in London are relieved that a strike by London Tube workers, which was supposed to take place on Wednesday and will continue on Friday, has been called off. Because one of the public transport services that people in London mainly rely on is the Tube service, which is the underground trains. Rail, Maritime and Transport Union (RMT) officials said the main demands of tube workers had been resolved through negotiations.
The union said there has been significant progress in negotiations on work and other service wage provisions. Had the strike gone ahead, over 3,000 RMT union members would have gone on strike last day and Friday. The union was in dispute with the authorities regarding the elimination of 600 posts. The union leaders claim that the major demands have been resolved, though extensive negotiations are needed on matters such as jobs, pensions, working agreements and ban on overtime.
Nick Dent, London Underground’s director of customer operations, said the RMT was delighted to call off this week’s planned strike and that stations are continuing to operate without disruption. Nick Dent added that this is good news for Tube riders and visitors to London. The RMT has previously questioned matters including cuts to the hours Tube staff are allowed to work. It was mainly due to this that the ARMT members prepared for the strike.
