Lord Nelson Letters Head to Sotheby’s with £6M Estimate

A historic collection of roughly 400 letters, manuscripts, and documents detailing the life, naval battles, and scandalous romance of British naval commander Vice-Admiral Lord Horatio Nelson is heading to Sotheby’s in London, with a pre-sale estimate of £4 million to £6 million.

The trove features intimate love letters written to his lover, society beauty Emma Hamilton, alongside battle plans and correspondence penned after the admiral lost his right arm.

The Sale of the Nelson Papers at Sotheby’s

  • Collector Clive Richards spent decades gathering the 415 documents, manuscripts, and letters now being offered as a single lot.
  • Bidding opened on Wednesday and runs until November 18, with proceeds benefiting the Clive Richards Foundation to support education, healthcare, heritage, and the arts.
  • The collection includes the Nelson Papers, the Hamilton Papers featuring 73 letters written by Emma Hamilton, and Nelson Family papers.

The archive captures every facet of Nelson’s career, from his victories against revolutionary France and Napoleon to his personal life. Gabriel Heaton, a books and manuscripts specialist at Sotheby’s, described the collection as “the greatest collection of its kind in private hands, full-stop.”

The correspondence sheds light on Nelson’s open affair with Hamilton, with whom he lived publicly despite both being married. In a January 1800 letter written at sea—previously sold by Christie’s in 2003 for nearly £120,000—Nelson recounted a dream about Hamilton, writing that “last night I did nothing but dream of you.” In contrast, a message sent to his wife stated he was too busy to write often.

The physical toll of Nelson’s service is heavily documented across the papers. After a musket shattered his right arm in 1797, Nelson learned to write with his left hand. Gabriel Heaton noted that one post-injury letter shows the admiral struggling to form letters before his wife took over the writing.

The collection also includes two letters written by Hamilton to Nelson shortly before the Battle of Trafalgar in October 1805. Because of the timing at sea, one letter—in which Hamilton declared Nelson the “Husband of my Heart”—only reached Nelson after the admiral was killed by a bullet on the deck of HMS Victory.

Following Nelson’s death, Hamilton faced severe financial ruin, spending time in a debtors’ prison before fleeing to France, where she died in 1815. Meanwhile, the letters she preserved remained prized historical artifacts.
