DUBAI: Mary Zayed, named after the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the founder of the UAE, captured the hearts of those who attended the Zayed Sustainability Prize (Sustainability Prize) event at an emotional ceremony held at the COP 28 venue in Dubai Expo City.

Mary’s grandfather spoke while addressing the audience during the Zayed Sustainability Awards ceremony. He lived in an area of Malawi where electricity was a distant dream. At a young age, the grandfather was haunted by the deep grief of losing his first child. Lack of access to electricity hindered the child’s access to proper treatment. In the maternity ward of the local hospital, lamps were lit to keep the babies warm. When Malawi received the Zayed Sustainability Prize, our lives began to change. With this recognition, an academy was established in Malawi to establish solar energy in the country. This played a crucial role in the safe birth and growth of her first child.

In honor of the transformative impact of the gift, and to express our gratitude to Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed, we named her Zayed. This will help usher in a new era of hope and progress born out of Sheikh Zayed’s legacy.

Established in honor of the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the Zayed Sustainability Prize has been a beacon of hope and innovation for more than 15 years. This year, 11 winners in six categories were honored with $3.6 million in prize money for their contributions to health, food, energy, water and climate action. These projects have helped transform the lives of 384 million people globally.
