The building has 63 units in RPA and 153 rental units, according to information in the RPA register of the Ministry of Health.

During their participation in the show Everybody talks about it (TLMEP) of April 23, two residents recounted their steps before the courts to maintain the current vocation of the building. Their fight is also the subject of a documentary recently released on Crave.

However, in an interview in English with Radio-Canada, the owner of the residence confirms having had recent discussions to sell his building paid 40 million dollars.

« The government doesn’t want to buy the building, the social and non-profit groups don’t want to buy the building, it’s my building, I’m trying to offer them a solution, they don’t want a solution […] it’s their decision, not mine. »

According to our information, at least one non-profit group has been approached by the businessman in recent weeks.

Another group, Espace La Traversée, has not been contacted officially, but would be open to discussions.

As the organization’s strategic advisor, Michel Saint-Cyr, explains, we don’t rule it out, but it would require an inspection of the building, we don’t know its condition.

It also depends on the financial package, the viability study to keep rents affordableadds Mr. Saint-Cyr, who maintains contact with the support group for residents of Mont-Carmel.

Espace La Traversée offers accommodation services as well as social housing to a clientele made up in particular of people with mental health problems. The organization manages a residential real estate portfolio of some twenty buildings and employs more than 300 people in Montreal.

A few hundred RPAs have closed in recent years due in part to rising operating costs. Quebec announced in its last budget more than $400 million over five years to ensure the sustainability of services in private seniors’ residences.

years in court

The group of residents of Mont-Carmel and the owner will meet again Friday in court.

The Court of Appeal will be called upon to rule on the jurisdiction of the Superior Court in the action to maintain the operation and certification of Mont-Carmel as an RPA.

Suzanne Loiselle is part of the residents’ committee. She deplores the slowness of the process.months we’ve been in this and we’re still on the preliminary question of whether we’re in the right court”,”text”:”We’ve been in this for 18 months and we’re still in the preliminary question of whether we are in the right court”}}”>We’ve been in this for 18 months and we’re still on the preliminary question of whether we’re on the right court.she says.

According to Henry Zavriyev, these steps before the courts could extend over several years. He says the frustrations known today come from the seven-person committee. They like to be in the spotlight […] I just want a solutionhe insists.

Marie-Paule Lebel, also a member of the committee, replies that: “Yes sir.” We talk to him, we make our observations, we formulate our objections, but it’s as if he doesn’t hear anything. The two women also indicate that the solidarity kitty to finance their legal costs increased from $30,000 to $130,000 after their transition to TLMEP.

Ms. Loiselle tempers: I really want solidarity, it’s extraordinary. But in the end, we have to win!

After the hearing in the Court of Appeal, the two parties will be back in court on May 17 concerning contempt of court, in connection with compliance with RPA certification.
