Despite the drought which is hitting national agriculture hard, the export of onions seems to be doing well. Evidenced by the figures which show a remarkable increase in exports. Selon East-fruitthe Kingdom exported more than 65,000 tonnes during the first nine months of the agricultural campaign (June 2022 – February 2023), i.e. a quantity greater than that exported during the entire previous campaign (60,000 tonnes).

The onion remains one of the most popular export vegetables. In 2022, it was the third most exported vegetable from Morocco after tomatoes and peppers, according to the specialized site, adding that onion exports generally peak in July-August and reach their minimum level after February. The African market remains one of the main destinations for Moroccan onions.

Since the 2017/18 season, Moroccan exporters have mainly targeted Mauritania, Ivory Coast and some other African countries. In Europe, the Netherlands are Morocco’s leading customers with a 6% share of total Moroccan exports.

As a reminder, the progress of Moroccan onions for export comes at a time when their price has increased remarkably on the national market. During the first months of 2023, prices peaked at 10 dirhams in some regions, causing consumer dissatisfaction.
