Mercedes Formula 1 boss Toto Wolff has slammed conspiracy theories suggesting his team favours championship leader Kimi Antonelli over teammate George Russell, calling such speculation completely nonsensical
and labeling those who believe it brainless
ahead of the Singapore Grand Prix.
The controversy erupted following the Malaysian Grand Prix, where a power unit failure forced George Russell to retire. That retirement left Russell 84 points behind Kimi Antonelli in the Drivers’ Championship, and it also triggered a grid penalty for the Singapore Grand Prix. Russell faces the task of starting from the back of the grid at the Marina Bay circuit on a track notoriously difficult for overtaking.
Online speculation quickly mounted, with some social media users suggesting the team’s technical issues and upgrade paths were deliberately engineered to prop up Antonelli’s title charge. Speaking to the media at the circuit on Friday, Toto Wolff offered an explosive rebuke to those claims.
“They’re brainless, whoever thinks that. I mean, it’s completely nonsensical. We’ve had it in the past with Lewis [Hamilton] fans. I mean, literally, I don’t know what’s going on.”

Wolff suggested that anonymous online culture had fueled toxic narratives. I guess this is maybe where social media goes today,
he noted, adding that internet critics often hide behind their screens and then they lash out
amid widespread polarization. He even joked about being dubbed Satan by online detractors, calling the abuse a source of personal entertainment before returning to a stern tone regarding respect within the sport.
Toto Wolff Tells F1 Critics to Watch Children’s Television
The Mercedes chief did not hide his disdain for the conspiratorial chatter circulating online. After dismissing the sabotage claims, Wolff suggested that individuals inventing these theories lacked basic comprehension of how a Formula 1 constructor operates.
“Zero understanding and respect for people who come up with these things. Rather than watching Formula 1, they should do Teletubbies or, I don’t know, some Mickey Mouse.”

The Austrian executive reflected on his long-standing management philosophy, tracing his commitment to equality back to his days at Williams and his earlier tenure managing the rivalry between Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg. He recalled asking Alain Prost why his relationship with Ayrton Senna deteriorated so severely at McLaren in the 1980s. Prost told him it happened because neither driver knew what the team stood for. Taking that lesson to heart, Wolff made it his personal challenge to keep operations balanced and transparent.

A Split Car Specification Test in Singapore
Mercedes brought operational decisions to the Marina Bay circuit to counter any notions of differential treatment. The team opted to split car specifications for the Singapore weekend. While Antonelli retained the recent upgrade, Russell reverted to the older Azerbaijan-spec W17.
Wolff explained that evaluating the two configurations on track was necessary because the team simply did not know which package would prove quicker. Despite Antonelli holding an 84-point lead in the championship standings, Wolff insisted that equal resources remain guaranteed.
Wolff stated that integrity has anchored the Silver Arrows since 2013.

Personal Ties and the Human Element Behind the Garage Doors
Beyond garage politics, Wolff emphasized the deep personal relationships binding the Mercedes leadership to both drivers. He noted that the team has worked with Antonelli since he was 11 years old, watching him grow into a championship contender at age 20. At the same time, Wolff expressed strong emotional attachment and compassion for Russell, who joined the organization when he was 17.
Those bonds extend far beyond the paddock gates. Wolff and his wife Susie regularly spend time away from the circuit with Russell and his partner Carmen Montero Mundt, sharing meals, training at the gym, and traveling together.
“If people would see that we’re travelling together, we’re having coffee in the same coffee shop, we’re going to the gym, that’s why it’s pretty annoying to have some lunatics that have no understanding really about how relationships work coming up with these kinds of accusations.”

With Russell setting the fastest time in Friday practice despite running the older car specification, Mercedes continues to lead the Constructors’ Championship by 151 points over Ferrari. Wolff maintains that both drivers will keep battling under identical terms.
