Oklahoma Stuns No. 1 Texas 27-24 on Walk-Off Field Goal

Oklahoma secured a dramatic 27-24 upset victory over top-ranked Texas at the Cotton Bowl, capped by Tate Sandell’s 47-yard walk-off field goal. The thrilling finish in Dallas snapped a two-game losing streak to the Longhorns and delivered the Sooners their first win over a top-ranked team since 2007.

The hard-fought rivalry matchup arrived on the heels of a difficult bye week following a loss to Georgia. Instead of dwelling on past struggles, Brent Venables and his squad authored a stunning chapter in the historic series, leaving the Texas fans watched in stunned silence as the Sooners, who made the trip south, serenaded their crimson-clad heroes at Fair Park.

Isaiah Sategna Sparks Late Drive for the Sooners

Oklahoma’s offense struggled to find traction for much of the afternoon, but Isaiah Sategna delivered crucial plays on the final possession. Following two video reviews, Sategna secured a pair of sideline receptions that turned the tide of the game.

The receiver first hauled in a 13-yard completion across midfield, followed by a 20-yard sideline grab where he managed to keep his left foot inbounds. Those receptions placed quarterback John Mateer in position to set up the game-winning kick on the left hash. Sategna finished the contest with five receptions for 64 yards, providing the vital spark needed to set up Sandell’s heroics.

Defense and Special Teams Keep Oklahoma Close

Before the offense woke up, the Sooners relied heavily on defensive resilience and special teams execution. Early defensive struggles allowed Texas to capitalize on a coverage breakdown, but the unit stiffened when it mattered most.

Sacks by Trent Wilson and Taylor Wein deep in Texas territory set the stage for a pivotal special teams play. Danny Okoye broke through the middle of the protection to block a punt, and reserve defensive back Dakoda Fields fell on the loose ball just inches from the boundary line to get the Sooners on the board.

The defensive momentum continued into the second half when safety Peyton Bowen intercepted a pass and returned it 42 yards for a touchdown, giving Oklahoma its first lead of the day. Later in the fourth quarter, after a Texas drive threatened to put the game out of reach, a tackle for loss by Owen Heinecke forced a missed Longhorn field goal. Courtland Guillory then sealed the defensive effort with an interception with 19 seconds remaining on the clock.

Offense Finds Rhythm to Complete the Comeback

Oklahoma’s early offensive output was sparse, producing just 15 yards in the opening quarter. However, the unit began to stir near the end of the first half with a methodical 11-play, 40-yard drive that preceded a missed 52-yard field goal attempt.

Out of the locker room, the Sooners maintained that momentum. A seven-play, 52-yard possession resulted in a 53-yard field goal by Sandell, cutting the deficit to one score. Soon after, Oklahoma marched 47 yards across six plays, capped by a 2-yard rushing touchdown from Lloyd Avant to tie the game.

Although the offense stalled again late in the fourth quarter, the final possession delivered when execution mattered most, securing a memorable victory in Dallas.
