One person has died following a fatal house fire on the Coromandel Peninsula in the early hours of Thursday morning, emergency services have confirmed. Fire and Emergency New Zealand responded to the emergency in Wharekaho, situated just northeast of Whitianga, at approximately 2:23 a.m., according to 1News.
Emergency Response and Sighting in Wharekaho
Emergency crews arrived to find a residential property “well involved” in flames, prompting the escalation of a second alarm. RNZ reported that a total of seven fire trucks were dispatched to tackle the blaze on Wharekaho Road. Two fire crews initially deployed to the scene managed to contain the fire, with one crew remaining behind during the morning hours to dampen down remaining hotspots.
Upon entering the structure, police discovered a body inside the property. Senior Sergeant Chris Painter stated that a scene guard remained in place outside the home overnight. Police initiated a formal scene examination alongside fire investigators on Thursday morning. Two fire investigators were dispatched immediately following the incident to determine the origin and cause of the tragedy.
Occupant Escapes as Investigators Examine Fatal Blaze
Authorities confirmed that an occupant of the house successfully raised the alarm and escaped physical injury. St John ambulance services responded to the scene with a single vehicle to provide immediate medical assessment, while support services were mobilised for the surviving occupant.
Wharekaho sits roughly four kilometers northeast of Whitianga, functioning as a residential coastal settlement on the eastern seaboard of the Coromandel Peninsula. With the scene examination underway, investigators continue to piece together the sequence of events that led to the fatal blaze.
