Over 5,000 Students Mobilize in Lyon Amid Nationwide Protests

At least 5,000 protesters mobilized in Lyon as student anger intensified across France, drawing thousands of participants into the streets amid ongoing demonstrations against educational policies and government responses.

A Nationwide Wave of Student Unrest

The demonstrations in Lyon formed part of a much larger nationwide wave of unrest involving high school students. According to figures from L’Union étudiante, approximately 450,000 demonstrators turned out across France, with roughly 100,000 marching in Paris alone.

Sharp Political Divisions in Paris

The protests have triggered sharp political divisions among national figures. Olivier Faure, First Secretary of the PS and a candidate in the social-democratic primary, characterized the movement by stating, “C’est une génération qui se lève.”

Conversely, Marine Tondelier, a candidate Les Écologistes à la présidentielle, criticized the government’s handling of the unrest, stating, “On a un ministre de l’Intérieur qui refuse de s’excuser, qui refuse d’appeler à la retenue des forces de l’ordre.” Tondelier added that the place of everyone, all political tendencies combined, should be alongside the students.

Union Condemnations and Organizer Demands

Government responses have faced steep criticism from educator unions as well. The SNES-FSU teachers’ union publicly denounced the remarks made by the Minister of Education, labeling the official responses as “hors sol et lunaires.”

Meanwhile, student organizers remain steadfast. Sabrine Kharbach, porte-parole de l’Union étudiante, demanded a massive and real investment in the educational system, while Ryad Rani, président de l’Union syndicale lycéenne, asserted that the mobilization must continue until a solution is found.

Administrative Pause and Local Blockade Tensions

In an effort to manage the escalating protests, Sébastien Lecornu announced the suspension of classes at the end of the week for “un temps de démocratie interne.” Despite this administrative pause, tensions on the ground remain high, underscored by scattered incidents captured on video during school blockades.

Footage from various locations highlighted unusual interactions between youth and security forces, including a standoff and arm wrestle between a student and a gendarme during a blockade, and a “battle d’aura” between a police officer and students in Mâcon. Other demonstrations featured peaceful gatherings, such as in Pau where students applauded firefighters responding to extinguish a fire, and in Nice where the protests remained “bon enfant.”

However, not all interactions remained peaceful. Authorities in Metz referred an incident to the Inspection générale de la Police nationale (IGPN) following the arrest of a young girl, during which a suspected sexual assault occurred.
