Qatar Airways is actively evaluating the addition of a premium economy cabin, signaling a potential shift for a carrier that has long resisted intermediate seating tiers. Group CEO Hamad Ali Al-Khater stated during a media briefing in Sydney that the airline is seriously considering the configuration.
Qatar Airways Studies Premium Economy Cabin Introduction
- Qatar Airways Group CEO Hamad Ali Al-Khater confirmed the airline is seriously studying the introduction of a premium economy cabin.
- Rival carriers including Emirates, Thai Airways, and LATAM have already adopted or scheduled similar intermediate cabin rollouts across their fleets.
- The carrier separately plans to debut its Qsuite Next Gen on Airbus A350-1000 aircraft in the middle of next year.
Evaluating the Middle Cabin After Years of Resistance
Speaking to journalists at Capella Sydney, Al-Khater addressed the carrier’s product strategy, as Executive Traveller reported. The airline has historically positioned its standard economy product as competitive in its own right, avoiding intermediate cabins. However, a broader industry trend toward premiumisation has shifted passenger demand increasingly toward enhanced cabins.
The potential addition would place Qatar Airways alongside major global competitors adjusting to shifting consumer preferences. Rival airline Emirates introduced its premium economy cabin in 2022 and further refined the seating design recently. Other carriers including Thai Airways and LATAM are scheduled to introduce premium economy offerings in 2027, followed by Turkish Airlines and Hawaiian Airlines in 2028.
Qsuite Next Gen Launches on Airbus A350-1000
Beyond the potential premium economy review, Al-Khater outlined clear timelines for upper-tier cabin investments. The airline’s next-generation Qsuite product, termed Qsuite Next Gen, is scheduled to launch in the middle of next year aboard Airbus A350-1000 aircraft, featuring enhanced privacy and flexible seating configurations like paired window spaces opening into shared areas.
Further fleet milestones align with the carrier’s 30th anniversary in 2027. That year will mark the debut of its first Airbus A321LR, outfitted with 16 international-grade flatbed business class suites featuring sliding privacy doors. The airline is also exploring a new first-class offering under serious design consideration, though neither first class nor premium economy has been assigned a confirmed launch date.

Qatar Airways Expands Flights to Australia
The product announcements accompany a broader acceleration of the airline’s Australian operations in partnership with Virgin Australia. Both carriers are targeting approximately 70 weekly flights between Australia and Doha by the end of 2026, with Qatar Airways increasing its standalone network from roughly 28 weekly services to at least 35.
