SMHI: Snow and autumn grip Sweden as three seasons collide

Meteorologists report that there are three seasons in Sweden, with autumn holding firm while snow falls in nearly half of the country and summer clings to the far south.

The weather pattern involves low-pressure systems over Svealand and Norrland, driving frigid temperatures and precipitation across multiple regions. SMHI meteorologist Maria Svedestig stated that the country faces a cold spell lasting a couple of days more, keeping seasonal boundaries divided.

Autumn Temperatures and Early Snowfall

The meteorological winter has already arrived at a few mountain stations in Lappland, while large parts of western Norrland brace for temperatures hovering around 0°C or dropping below freezing. In the eastern parts of Norrland, temperatures reach up to 5°C. Meanwhile, from northern Värmland up to the Sundsvall area marks the boundary for where it is officially autumn, defined by an average temperature below 10°C for five days in a row.

Precipitation takes the form of snowfall in Värmland and large parts of Norrland over the coming day, while Götaland experiences rain showers instead. Earlier in the week, snow fell over Dalarna and created large problems in traffic along the E45. In eastern Svealand, rainy weather persists, with Stockholm temperatures projected to stay below 10°C until Wednesday before climbing toward the weekend. On Friday, it is expected to be warmest during the week, with 13°C at most.

Strong Winds and Southern Summer

Gusty conditions are set to sweep across southern and western regions. Winds pick up on Monday with fresh gusts, escalating by the night into Tuesday across Götaland and western Svealand with speeds reaching approximately 5 to 10 meters per second, creating very windy conditions.

In the southernmost region of Skåne, summer retains a grip. Temperatures are expected to exceed 10°C at least at some point during the day, all through the coming week.

Upcoming Precipitation Forecast

Rain is forecasted to continue until Monday morning, at which point the low-pressure system weakens and yields more stable weather. On Wednesday, precipitation is expected in the whole country—rain in the south, and snowfall in large parts of Norrland.
