Social Media Ban for Halk TV Owner Cafer Mahiroğlu Over Incitement Allegations

Istanbul prosecutors moved to restrict access to the personal social media accounts of Cafer Mahiroğlu, the owner of Halk TV, following earlier decisions to issue an arrest warrant while he is abroad, Sözcü reported. The action centers on allegations that Mahiroğlu made crowd-inciting calls outside the Halk TV headquarters. According to details obtained by Sözcü reporter Dilara Şahin, the prosecutor’s office alleges that Mahiroğlu routed payments from Bustech—a shell company established as a subcontractor on tenders—among his corporate holdings. Prosecutors claim he then utilized the Halk TV corporate entity as a shield to paint a financial inquiry as a political operation against the broadcaster, constituting charges of public provocation and the dissemination of misleading information.

Investigation Leads to Blackout of Halk TV Accounts

The restrictions on Mahiroğlu’s personal profile follow a broader enforcement wave targeting the broadcaster’s digital footprint. According to T24, the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office broadened the scope of an ongoing investigation into allegations of bribery, bid-rigging, and the laundering of criminal assets. Consequently, Halk TV’s official institutional accounts across YouTube, X, Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and Telegram have been rendered entirely invisible online.

Volkan Enver Kılıç, the Eskişehir Provincial Chair of the CHP, alleged that Özgür Özel and his inner circle transferred 80 million liras from party funds directly to Halk TV patron Cafer Mahiroğlu, as reported by Sabah.

Yeni Parti Plans Solidarity Rally for Halk TV

In response to the mounting administrative and legal measures, opposition figures have mobilized public pushback. Speaking after a Central Executive Board meeting, Yeni Parti Spokesperson Zeynel Emre announced plans for a solidarity gathering outside the station’s headquarters. We will hold a solidarity rally with Halk TV there, Emre stated, inviting citizens across party lines to participate in the demonstration scheduled for Wednesday at 19:30, as detailed by Evrensel.

Emre emphasized the network’s role as a platform for diverse opposition voices, noting that party leadership intends to consult with other political leaders regarding the digital restrictions. The demonstration aims to draw public attention to the pressures facing independent media outlets in Turkey, framing the restrictions on the channel and its leadership as a broader test of press freedom.

Trustees at Halk TV Signal Media Control

The intervention against Halk TV has drawn sharp assessments regarding the trajectory of governance and constitutional order in Turkey. Commentators note that state-appointed trustees have been introduced to Halk TV, aligning with an environment where dozens of television channels operate under official control. Critics argue that Böylece Türkiye 1930’ların Nazi Almanya’sına döndü! and describe the current media environment not as a legitimate press apparatus, but as a mechanism that undermines ethical standards. Discussions surrounding the institutional shifts often trace these developments back to historical political milestones, with specific assertions maintaining that Bu darbe Mustafa Kemal Atatürk’ün kurduğu Türkiye Cumhuriyeti’ne ve onun kuruluş ilkelerine karşı gerçekleştirilmiştir.
