State Farm Mutual Automobile Insurance Company has begun distributing a $5 billion cash-back dividend to policyholders nationwide. The payout covers more than 49 million vehicles, returning between 4% and 10% of 2025 auto premiums to qualifying customers without requiring any claim submissions.
How the $5 Billion Payout Works
Millions of auto insurance customers across the country are discovering digital alerts or physical checks in their mailboxes as State Farm rolls out its largest financial return in the company’s 100-plus-year history. State Farm Mutual Automobile Insurance Company announced it has begun issuing payments to qualifying auto customers as part of its one-time $5 billion cash-back dividend, which was announced earlier this year. Calling it the largest in the company’s 100-plus-year history, they shared that millions of customers have already received their individual dividend payments, with more on the way.
State Farm said it is possible because it is a “mutual” insurance company, meaning it is owned by its policyholders, not stockholders. State Farm’s dividend is possible through the company’s financial strength and a stronger-than-expected underwriting performance,
a news release said. Jon Farney, State Farm Mutual President and CEO, said in a press release: “As a mutual company with a customer-first focus, State Farm Mutual is able to provide value directly to our customers while maintaining financial strength to keep our promises in the future. That translated this year to lower auto rates and cash back in the form of a $5 billion policyholder dividend.”
Customers do not need to submit a claim, as State Farm said qualifying customers will receive an email or letter notifying them about their pending payment.
Calculating Your Dividend and Managing Delivery
Individual payouts are calculated as a percentage of the premium paid on qualifying auto policies in 2025. Because insurance regulations differ across the country, those percentages will vary by state, ranging anywhere from 4% to 10% depending on the state where the policy is assigned.
Policyholders can check their expected return by logging into the official State Farm app or website. Customers who already have an email address registered with State Farm will receive instructions for accessing a payment portal, where they can choose between a digital payment or a check, the company said. Those without an email address on file will automatically receive a check through the mail.
Importantly, this payout will not impact insurance rates, so you can rest assured cashing the check will not raise your future premium rates, according to State Farm.

Other insurance updates have occurred in regional markets such as Florida, where Progressive is giving back to policyholders this year. Last year, Gov. Ron DeSantis announced rebates for Progressive customers totaling $1 billion, going back to Florida policyholders. This came as Florida residents’ insurance costs for both auto and home had been, and still are, among the highest in the country. However, DeSantis said insurance rates were dropping or at least stabilizing, adding that the top five auto insurance writers in Florida have averaged a 6.5% rate reduction in 2025. Both DeSantis and Florida Insurance Commissioner Michael Yaworsky credited the move to legal changes in 2022 and 2023 aimed at what DeSantis described as frivolous litigation,
which made it harder for attorneys to collect hefty legal fees in insurance lawsuits. Rebates were distributed earlier this year, with officials saying the average amount is roughly $300 per customer.
