Cyclists navigating the bustling asphalt of Swiss urban centers are routinely passing far too close to danger, according to a striking new assessment released by the Swiss Transport and Environment Association (ATE). The study reveals that nearly eight out of ten overtaking maneuvers executed by motorists in major Swiss cities fail to maintain a safe 1.5-meter lateral buffer, leaving vulnerable road users exposed to narrow passes on a daily basis.

Quantifying the Close Calls Across Major Swiss Corridors

Conducted in partnership with the Haute école spécialisée de Suisse orientale (OST), the research analyzed overtaking dynamics across primary cycling routes in seven major cities, including Bern, Zurich, Geneva, and Sion. The findings paint a sobering picture of urban mobility: the average passing distance measured 120 centimeters. Worse still, in more than a third of all recorded instances, motorists shaved past cyclists with less than one meter of clearance.

According to the study, the hazard is greater on primary thoroughfares, with 9.2 overtaking maneuvers per kilometer compared to 1.5 on secondary axes. Even in the presence of a child trailer, the overtaking distance is “almost as small.”

The Ambiguity of Current Traffic Law

At the heart of the crisis lies a legislative situation where the law is not clear. Current Swiss traffic regulations merely instruct drivers to maintain a “sufficient distance” when bypassing two-wheeled traffic and to show “particular consideration” for cyclists.

“It transforms an overtaking maneuver into a question of appreciation that can put lives in danger,” said Edward Weber of the ATE, pointing to the need for reform. Without a hard numerical standard enshrined in the statutes, enforcement remains a challenge.

To rectify this, the ATE is formally demanding that a mandatory 1.5-meter minimum overtaking distance be explicitly written into law.

Infrastructure and Speed Limits as Shields

Beyond legislative changes, the study underscores the impact of physical street design and lower speed limits in mitigating risk. Researchers noted that infrastructure—such as separated bike lanes or widened cycling strips—allows for an increase in distance.

Furthermore, the 30 km/h limit makes overtaking less strenuous and can reduce the severity of accidents.

The Road Ahead for Urban Cyclists

As this debate gains traction, the pressure is mounting to address the loopholes in road traffic acts. Transforming the daily commute will demand more than encouragement—it will require a binding legal boundary.
