A 32-year-old man will be charged with murder on Wednesday following a deadly incident at Telok Blangah Heights on Monday evening that left a 73-year-old man dead and another 53-year-old man injured. The suspect surrendered to police, while investigators confirmed he acted alone with no terror links.
Monday evening in the Telok Blangah Heights neighborhood turned chaotic when a violent confrontation spilled across a residential block and into a local coffee shop. The Singapore Police Force received calls for assistance in the vicinity of Block 61 at about 6pm on Oct 5. Officers arrived at the scene within 10 minutes to find two victims requiring urgent medical care. Upon arriving at approximately 10.50pm, journalists from The Straits Times observed that law enforcement had restricted access to multiple zones, encompassing the coffee shop situated at Block 61, the ground-floor void deck of Block 57, and a section of the open-air parking lot lying between the two blocks.
A 73-year-old man was discovered lying motionless on the ground floor, while a 53-year-old man had sustained injuries. Both individuals were rushed by the Singapore Civil Defence Force to Singapore General Hospital. The older victim ultimately succumbed to his injuries, while the younger man remained conscious during transport. Chinese-language daily Lianhe Zaobao reported that the suspect allegedly stabbed the two men with a knife.
Clinic Doctor and Coffee Shop Patrons Rush to Aid Victims
Nearby residents and medical professionals rushed to assist before emergency responders arrived. Joel Lee, from The Local Doctor Clinic at 61 Telok Blangah Heights, was seeing his first patient of the evening when a staff member alerted him to bleeding outside.
Stepping outside, Lee encountered the injured 53-year-old man bleeding from his left shoulder. Instead of seeking treatment for himself, the wounded man urged the doctor to help someone else first, directing him toward a 73-year-old man at a nearby coffee shop in far graver condition.
By the time I got there… there was somebody holding his chest, and his hands had already slumped.
Joel Lee, The Local Doctor Clinic
Lee attempted to stem the profuse bleeding from the senior’s chest and kept him engaged by talking to him. Eyewitnesses at the coffee shop recounted seeing two blood-soaked men running from the direction of Block 56 toward Block 61. One patron recalled that patrons were stunned before realizing the severity of the situation and calling authorities. Seated just three tables away from where Dr. Lee was administering aid to the older victim, 48-year-old Telok Blangah Heights local Harvinder Singh was enjoying his evening beer.
Surrender, Charges, and Ongoing Police Investigation
Following the attack, the 32-year-old suspect called the police to surrender and was arrested in the immediate vicinity. Authorities recovered a knife believed to have been used in the assault. Investigators have stated that the suspect acted alone and found no evidence indicating the attack was religiously motivated or an act of terror. Lianhe Zaobao reported that the three men did not know one another.

The accused man will be charged with murder under Section 302(1) of the Penal Code on Oct 7. In Singapore, a conviction for murder under this statutory provision carries the death penalty.
Community Grief and MP Rachel Ong’s Plea for Privacy
Tanjong Pagar MP Rachel Ong shared her heartbreak in a Facebook post after meeting the victim’s grieving family on the night of the incident.

They are still trying to come to terms with what has happened and have asked for privacy during this very difficult time. This is tragic beyond words, and our hearts go out to them.
Rachel Ong, Tanjong Pagar MP
Ong also cautioned the public against spreading unverified details or sharing identifying photographs of those involved, urging residents to allow the police to investigate and the legal process to run its course. Police investigations remain active.
