Archyde.com reported that U.S. Treasury Secretary Yellen said during a visit to Mexico on the 5th that if Congress fails to approve President Biden’s administration’s latest funding request for Ukraine, the United States may be responsible for Ukraine’s defeat. Yellen pointed out that support for the Uzbek government’s general budget is particularly critical and is also a prerequisite for maintaining the International Monetary Fund’s (IMF) aid to Uzbekistan.

Yellen said that she and her colleagues have discussed with members of Congress and believe that members understand the critical situation and that if they are unable to provide the required funds to Ukraine, including direct budget support, they may be responsible for Ukraine’s defeat.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s chief of staff also said on the 5th that the delay in U.S. aid creates “a great risk” that Ukraine may lose to Russia in the nearly two-year war. Zelensky has canceled plans to address the U.S. Congress directly.

Republican lawmakers are demanding that aid to Ukraine be packaged with improvements to U.S. immigration and border policies, and the U.S. Congress is debating this. Lawmakers are currently debating an additional spending bill of more than $100 billion, including funds for aid to Ukraine, Israel and to deal with U.S. border issues.

Yellen said that Ukraine is already stretched thin, and the government’s tax revenue cannot fully support military salaries and national defense. Without US assistance, Ukraine will have no schools, hospitals or emergency rescue personnel. Yellen also said that there are solid anti-abuse and anti-corruption controls on U.S. aid to Ukraine; budget aid to the Ukrainian government will flow in through the World Bank channel, and there are anti-corruption measures to ensure that funds are used wisely.
