Vienna’s President of the Landtag, Ernst Woller, also symbolically took over the presidency from the President of Carinthia, Reinhart Rohr, by ringing the bell during the session

Vienna (OTS) A joint conference of the presidents of the Austrian state parliament takes place every six months. At the end of their term of office, the presiding state parliament presidents hand over to their subsequent colleagues from another federal state – since December 2022 also symbolically in the form of a meeting bell. Manufactured by traditional Styrian blacksmiths and casters, it is present at all meetings of the conference and wanders through the federal states every six months.

Since July 1, 2023, Vienna has chaired the Conference of the Presidents of the Austrian Parliament. On July 24, 2023, Carinthia’s President of the Landtag, Reinhart Rohr, handed over the bell to Ernst Woller, First President of the Landtag of Vienna, in the presence of the President of the Bundesrat, Claudia Arpa.

“The Austrian provincial parliaments, as the elected representatives of the people at the regional level, are important carriers of federalism and democracy. The conferences of their presidents and directors are always characterized by collegial cooperation across party lines. I’m looking forward to the upcoming conference, which will take place in Vienna in September on the subject of ‘Climate – the challenge of our time’,” said Woller upon taking over.

Carinthia’s President Reinhart Rohr. “It is a great pleasure for me to be able to hand over this piece of craftsmanship from Styria to Vienna today as a presidential and parliamentary symbol. The bell also stands for strong, cross-state cooperation.”
