This morning around 5 a.m. several calls reported a fire in a house located in Etterbeek, rue Aviateur Thieffry, explains Walter Derieuw, spokesperson for the Brussels fire brigade.
On site, the ground floor of the house was completely ablaze and additional fire and medical resources were immediately dispatched to the scene.
With the invaluable help of the Montgomery zone police, the evacuation of those present and the establishment of a security and exclusion perimeter might quickly be set up.
Unfortunately, one person died, despite an attempt at resuscitation. She was a student of European foreign nationality and studying in Belgium as part of an exchange program. A neighbor suffered a minor head injury during the evacuation and was taken to hospital.
The fire was brought under control around 5:15 a.m. According to the first elements of the investigation, the cause would be accidental. The house is now uninhabitable and the three people need to be relocated. A car parked near the house was also damaged by the fire.
