Antwerp Airport: The Controversy Surrounding Domestic Flights and Pilot Training Courses

2023-08-08 10:04:39

Of all the movements recorded in 2022 at Antwerp airport, 72% concerned domestic flights, according to figures released by Groen. The airport explains this result by the many pilot training courses organized on its site. The Greens, who demand the closure of the airportreport a total of thirty thousand domestic flight movements at the Deurne site.

The majority of domestic flights departing from Antwerp airport land at this same airport at the end of their journey. However, some flights are sometimes organized from or to other Belgian airports. “It is completely irrational that the Flemish government is pumping millions of taxpayers’ money into an airport that is loss-making and useless for air transport within its own borders“, denounces Groen.

The Green Party is asking, like the Federal Minister for Mobility Georges Gilkinet (Ecolo), for a ban on domestic flights. The airport defends itself, however, stressing that training flights are not wasteful. “We train the pilots of tomorrow. There are half a dozen flight schools in Antwerp and we have the necessary equipment, such as navigation systems and simulators, to train them.
