It is an e-mail which should have remained confidential but which British coach Martin Cox revealed on January 9 on his Instagram account (@vo2maxcoaching) to denounce a process that he considers “disgusting”. At the start of the year, the American Zach Miller and the star of the discipline, the Spaniard Kilian Jornet, wrote to around a hundred of the best trail runners in the world to find out if they would be interested in “thinking regarding participating in a race other than the UTMB” in 2024. To understand, you have to imagine Nadal and Djokovic writing to the ATP top 100 to ask them to boycott the next Wimbledon.

The Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc (UTMB), a 171 km race scheduled for 2024 from August 26 to September 1, is the most prestigious of very long distance mountain races. Created in 2003, it has acquired a worldwide reputation over the years and each year attracts more and more participants in its eight variations, spectators along the route, media and economic benefits for the Chamonix region, of which it has become the biggest annual event. Kilian Jornet has won the race four times and set a record in 2022, Zach Miller placed second last year behind compatriot Jim Walmsley.
