At the Ploërmel Football Club (Morbihan), which has 22 teams and nearly 600 members, there are eight referees, including two women.
Which was not the case three years ago, as former club president Jean-Claude Eon recalls: “We were in violation, because we only had three referees whereas at our level, there were takes five. If we do not have the necessary number, we pay a fine per year. A referee must play at least 22 matches in a season. »
Referees at the heart of the game at Ploërmel FC
Since then, the organization has evolved and Alain Hillaireau has become the referent of the referees. The latter carried out in-depth work and above all, he put the referees back at the heart of the game by integrating them more within the club. Thanks to this increased number, arbitration has a direct impact on recruitment. The club can accommodate four to six recruits for the first team.
The referee manager explains his beginnings:
I didn’t want to work alone on this project, because we are part of a club. Everyone might talk regarding it around them, but it was important to communicate well. Today, I am well supported by Jérôme Maret and Stéphane Blandel

Often, clubs think that the solution will come from outside. Ploërmel FC, for its part, took the problem on its head by finding the solution from within. “We went to meet people who volunteered their time to referee the football school categories. We solicited them and then trained them by registering them for the FIA session (Initial Refereeing Training) which takes place over three days. It covers refereeing techniques, training, meeting management and even management. »
The referee: firstly a football enthusiast
Even if a referee does not have the same jersey as two teams facing each other, he remains passionate regarding football and this is felt in the speeches of Ryan Houssack or Maxence Ladiray who have a somewhat similar background by being from first player before taking the whistle in hand. “By learning the laws, we understand certain decisions better, we have a different perspective. Being a referee, it’s a real plus on a CV, because we have a rigorous, serious side and we know the discipline. »
